Wedding Gifts
We do not have a wedding registry. The most valuable thing that you can give us is your presence at our wedding!
If you anyways would like to give us a gift, we ask that you give it in the form of “Goshugi” which you can read more about below.
Whether you give a gift or not, we ask that you bring an envelope with you to the reception that you can hand in when you check in.
This is so that all guests, Japanese and international feel that they are honouring the same traditions.
A Note for Our International Guests
We understand that this tradition might be unfamiliar to some of you joining us from abroad. Please don't feel any pressure to give Goshugi. Your presence at our wedding is the most important gift of all!
If you'd like to participate in this custom, you are more than welcome to offer Goshugi. However, if you prefer, you can simply present an empty envelope to show your respect for this tradition.
We also understand that it might be difficult to find a special Goshugi envelope. If you can’t find one, any other style of envelope works just as well.
Wedding Gift Etiquette in Japan, The Tradition of "Goshugi"
In Japan, it's customary for guests to celebrate weddings by offering "Goshugi", a monetary gift presented in a special envelope at the wedding reception. This practice symbolizes good luck and support for the couple's new life together. This is instead of any physical gifts that’s given in many other cultures.
How Goshugi Works
Special Envelopes: Goshugi is placed in decorative envelopes specifically designed for this purpose. These can be found at convenience stores, department stores, and stationery shops throughout Japan.
The Amount: The amount given typically varies depending on your relationship with the couple and your own financial situation. As a general guideline, friends might give around 30,000 yen, while relatives might give 50,000 yen or more.
Odd Numbers: Traditionally, odd-numbered amounts are preferred, as even numbers can be divided (symbolizing a potential separation).
Writing Your Name: If you give Goshugi, please write your name on the front of the envelope.
Timing: The Goshugi envelope is traditionally given upon your arrival at the reception. There will be a designated reception desk where two attendants will be available to accept your envelope and check you in for the event.
